What is "multi-signature"?

Multi-signature, also called multi-sig, is a security protocol that is part of the bitcoin core in which multiple private keys are required to sign a transaction. This technology is designed to increase the security of bitcoin storage by requiring more than one private key to generate a bitcoin address and requiring a specific combination of private keys (for example 3 out of 5 keys) to sign a bitcoin transaction before the coins are released.

All Pockets in Xapo's Wallets (as well as our Vault) have multi-signature automatically enabled. You can verify this by looking at the blockchain address for any of your Xapo Pockets; all multi-signature addresses start with the number 3.
