What is "multi-signature"?

Multi-signature, also called multi-sig, is a security protocol that is part of the Bitcoin technology in which multiple private keys are required to sign a transaction. This technology is designed to increase security by requiring more than one private key to generate a bitcoin address and requiring a specific combination of private keys (for example, 3 out of 5 keys) to sign a bitcoin transaction before the coins are released.

Xapo makes sure that these private keys are kept in deep-cold storage, located in offline servers that have never been and never will be online. This allows us to never have to store private keys on your phone or your computer; they always remain in our hands and if someone were to hack your device, they couldn't get access to your keys.

All of your spending and savings accounts at Xapo are automatically enabled with multi-sig, and you can remain confident that your money will always be kept safe and sound.
