The Xapo Bitcoin Debit Card is a Visa card that you can use for your purchases in stores, online and to withdraw cash at ATMs - all of this directly in bitcoin. The card is accepted in billions of stores and ATMs around the world.
The Xapo Card works just like any other debit card, but instead of drawing funds from your bank account, it debits purchases directly in bitcoin from your Xapo main wallet. The Xapo Debit Card is not a pre-paid card, so you do not need to pre-load cards with cash to make purchases.
The Debit Card is only linked with your Xapo main wallet - never the Vault, or other additional wallets you may create on Xapo. We suggest that you keep the funds intended for your debit card usage in the main wallet, and all other bitcoins meant for daily spending in additional wallets. Long-term savings should be kept in the Vault.
Xapo Debit Cards are offered in three different spending currencies: USD, EUR and GBP. You must select this base currency when you order your card, although all transactions are always debited in bitcoin. You can order one card per Xapo account. The debit card is valid for 3 years.
Once you have activated your Xapo Debit Card and retrieved the PIN, you can change this PIN at an ATM.
However, not all ATMs offer this feature so the ability to change your Xapo Debit Card PIN will depend on the ATM. If the ATM provides you with a "settings" option, that would be a good way to start!
Please keep in mind that our card issuer charges a small fee for changing your debit card PIN.
Most likely because your Main Wallet did not have sufficient funds to cover your transaction!
A few tips:
Please make sure to follow these tips and always have sufficient funds in your Main Wallet so you can spend your bitcoin anywhere with the Xapo Debit Card!
Please see the fee schedule below. The fees are different depending on the card’s spending currency (USD, EUR, GBP) you’ve selected when you ordered your card.
If you use your card for purchases in your card spending currency, no fees are charged. If the purchase is made in a currency that's different from your card's spending currency, a 3% Foreign Exchange fee is applied. ATM withdrawals always have a fixed fee. For the sake of clarity, if you withdraw cash in a currency different from your spending currency, both the 3% exchange fee and the ATM Withdrawal (in other currencies) fee are applied.
In addition, while we do not charge any monthly fees, there’s an Annual Fee. However, because we value as a customer and want you to experience the value of the debit card, we waive the Annual Fee for your first year as a cardholder!
Yes, there are some standard usage limits.
After you receive your card, we can upgrade your limits!

Xapo offers two types of delivery methods for your Xapo debit card.
All cards are created and dispatched from our card issuer’s facilities 2-3 days after you have completed the order.
Your card will arrive in a standard envelope as a normal letter without any tracking information. The card will be sent via Royal Mail, which delivers to your country’s local post service, and is then completely dependent on the processing centers and postal service of your country. Xapo has no control over this type of delivery, and we are not responsible for any delays or cards lost in mail.
Please know that average turnaround time for standard delivery depends on your location and local postal services. Estimated delivery times are:
If the card is not delivered within 35 days from when it was dispatched, we highly recommend that you cancel the existing card and order a new card with DHL tracking to guarantee a delivery.
Expedited DHL Delivery Times:
Your card will arrive via expedited DHL delivery with a tracking code so that you can follow your card en route. The tracking code will be sent to you 3-5 days after you have completed the order for your card. Below are the average delivery times for DHL shipping:
It may be that your card will arrive before you have received the DHL tracking code, so we recommend that you check your tracking status as soon as you get the number. If DHL is not able to deliver your card, they will put the shipment on hold. If this is the case, you will need to contact DHL and provide your exact address as soon as possible, because if you do not respond after 2 weeks, they will send your card back to the sender (MyChoice), and at that point, it will not be possible to retrieve your card.
After you’ve received your Xapo Debit Card, you can activate it directly within your Xapo account by going to your wallet settings and entering the last 4 digits of your card number. Once the card has been activated, you can also view the card PIN so you can start spending your bitcoin!
All transaction cancellations and refunds are automatically processed when Xapo receives the corresponding notice from the merchant. Most declines are processed in real-time, but some of these decline notices take 1-2 days to reach Xapo (not including weekends). Merchants can take up to 14 days to broadcast the refund into the payment network.
For example, if you purchased a book on Amazon for $20, but then decided to return the item, Amazon will initiate the refund for $20. Amazon’s refund notice must travel through the payment processing network, and the $20 will be returned to your Xapo wallet as soon as we receive the refund information. You will receive the refund in bitcoin.
A small portion of refunds are still processed manually, and we process all pending refunds every 2 weeks.
Debit card transactions that appear as ‘processing’ are authorizations that are on hold and waiting to be confirmed. Items that have been confirmed and settled are displayed with the status of “completed”, or “canceled”.
Just as any other debit card, when you pay a merchant, you authorize the transaction amount by signing the receipt, introducing the card PIN, or by confirming the purchase online. When an authorization takes place, the purchase amount (in bitcoin) will be reserved and placed on hold from your Xapo main wallet. These authorizations will not be confirmed until Xapo receives and processes them.
For most merchant transactions, the merchant knows the exact amount of the transaction and asks you to authorize that amount. For example, if you buy $25.75 worth of groceries, the store would ask you to authorize a $25.75 charge or debit to your account. That amount would then appear as a processing transaction on your Xapo wallet until it is settled.
In other cases, the original authorization amount may be different from the settlement amount, in which case your purchase amount will be updated when the transaction is closed from 'Processing' to 'Completed'. (As an example, please see Debit Card purchases at gas stations)
Most transactions are settled within 1-3 days from authorization, but settlements can take up to 14 days. This means that occasionally canceling an authorization can take a few days until Xapo receives the settlement information.
Declined transactions may at times first be debited from your main wallet, yet the funds are always returned to your wallet once the transaction has been settled. You can check the transaction status by looking at the transaction detail. If the status is still 'Pending' or 'Processing', it means that the purchase has not yet been settled. If the status is 'Canceled', the transactions has been declined and the funds returned to your wallet. You can read more about the settlement process here.
These are the most common decline reasons for ATM withdrawals:
All gas station purchases made with the Xapo Debit Card have an additional 'padding' charge (this is standard practice in the debit card industry).
Xapo will hold on to a certain amount of funds (100 USD, 85 EUR, or 75 GBP depending on your card currency). Once Xapo receives the settlement information from the merchant (usually within 24-48 hours), this 'padding' is returned to your wallet!
Your Xapo Debit Card - and its PIN - should be kept secure at all times! If your card is lost or stolen, please contact us immediately at email@example.com to cancel it.
Remember that your Xapo Debit Card is only linked to your Main Wallet! As a precautionary step, you should move any bitcoins from your Main Wallet to an additional Xapo wallet or vault to make sure your card does not have any funds to consume.
Once your card has been canceled, you can follow up with firstname.lastname@example.org to order a new card!
The Xapo Debit Card can be linked directly to PayPal through their "Withdraw from Paypal" feature (if applicable in your country).
However, please keep in mind the following:
1) As the Xapo Debit Card is exclusively a bitcoin debit card, when you use the "withdraw from PayPal" feature you are in effect purchasing bitcoins. Hence, the transaction will be treated as any standard bitcoin purchase via the Xapo platform, which means that corresponding commissions will be applied.
2) Due to the nature of the transaction, your bitcoin purchase via "withdraw from PayPal" is not automatically processed and will be manually credited to your wallet. These manual credits are normally processed every 14 days. We will use a BTC price at the moment of the manual credit to determine the amount of bitcoin that should be credited to your account, and then apply any due commissions.
3) Paypal determines the currency of a card based on where it was dispatched from. The Xapo Debit Card is dispatched from Gibraltar, and Paypal will automatically set your card’s currency as GIP. In order to change this to the actual currency of your card (GPB, USD, or EUR), you will need to reach out to Paypal support and they will update your account.
